Property Prices Increased Most In North West

According to leading online estate agency portal Rightmove.co.uk, the average asking prices in the North West housing market were up by 4.6% in the past month, Rightmove.co.uk said average asking prices in the region rose from £162,674 in February this year to £170,194 in March 2010. Rightmove.co.uk said the average asking price in the North West in March last year was £156,584, which has shown that the annual change has shown 8.7% increase.

Greengate Embankment Finally Gets The All Clear!

There was talk a few years ago about a new development scheme in the Greenagate area of the city centre which will basically link Salford and Manchester together. First-Time Buyers Given Mortgage Boost

Two of the big banks, the Co-operative and Britannia recently made a return to 90% lending, as we predicted more would follow and now the Post Office have just announced they will be stepping into the 90% loan-to-value (LTV) market offering a two-year fixed rate at 5.45% with a £999 fee. This two-year fixed-rate deal trumps the deal launched by the Co-operative and Britannia by a good half percent, although this will probably not be seen as competition for the big two it will hopefully coax other lenders into the market. This will come as great news for those first time buyers looking to get their foot on the property ladder that are finding it difficult to accumulate a 15% or 30 % deposit.

Northern Quarter Awarded `Best Neighbourhood In Britain`

Having recently attracted the attention of Hollywood when the Northern Quarter it was chosen as the location for filming of the forthcoming Hollywood blockbuster, Captain America, starring Chris Evans and Samuel L Jackson, the Northern Quarter is now receiving praise a little closer to home after it was awarded the title of ‘the best neighbourhood in Britain'.

The vibrant Northern Quarter district – often dubbed the cultural heart of Manchester – won the title ahead of rivals from Belfast and Glasgow. Judges of the 2011 Great Neighbourhood of the Year award praised the Northern Quarter for undergoing ‘significant redevelopment and diversification' in recent years.

They said the area had become a ‘vibrant home' to a mix of fashion designers, creative agencies, art galleries and popular bars and restaurants. The area - home to the iconic Afflecks Palace – is known for its cosmopolitan mix of shops and apartments.

The latest award was given by the Academy of Urbanism, whose members include top architects, planners, engineers, developers and designers. They aim to recognise the best, most enduring or most improved urban environments in the country.

Judges were impressed by the Northern Quarter's charm after a visit over the summer.

John Thompson, chairman of the Academy of Urbanism, said: `Thanks to a long-term programme of development and regeneration, the Northern Quarter has become a vibrant contemporary extension to Manchester city centre, while retaining its own character.

`The Academy of Urbanism created these awards to recognise places which have helped enhance local quality of life – the Northern Quarter is a wonderful example of this.`

Other winners included Glasgow for European City of the Year and Hebden Bridge for Great Town of the Year.
